There is a wide variety of adhesive tapes available, each featuring different types of adhesives; consequently, performance and strength vary across brands. Therefore, several factors should be considered when purchasing tape:
The porosity of the surface to be bonded: Tape adhesion relies on the moisture within the adhesive penetrating the surface and drying rapidly, effectively integrating the tape with the substrate. Thus, the surface porosity of the object to be bonded is a crucial factor in tape selection. If the surface is highly porous or absorbent, a tape with an adhesive that sets quickly is required; conversely, if the surface is less porous, a tape with a slower-setting adhesive or a higher adhesive content is more suitable.
The adhesive coating: During manufacturing, adhesive is applied to the backing material and must be thoroughly dried before the tape is wound into rolls. If the adhesive remains too moist, the tape layers will stick tightly together, making it difficult-or even impossible-to unroll and use.
